Darren Abley will start a demanding nine-day trip across the Himalayas on October 25 with the aim of collecting thousands of pounds for the national charity CoppaFeel.
CoppaFeel, which encourages people to know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, is taking 100 people, including celebrities, on the expedition to mark its 10th anniversary and Darren was chosen as a member of the team.
“One of our Cameron site managers has had breast cancer and my wife has had a scare so I want to help raise awareness that both men and women can get this disease and that everyone should look out for early signs,” said Darren.
“CoppaFeel is a very worthwhile charity and I undertook a similar challenge for them in Peru five years ago, raising over £9,000 and I hope to collect at least £6,000 in sponsorship this time.
“It will be a very tough trip mentally and physically and I am training hard – going to the gym and doing lots of walking and cycling.
“We will be trekking through the Himalayan mountains and rough terrain in hot temperatures, with the highest altitude of 2,757m, for up to eight hours a day for four days, as well as competing against each other in gruelling tasks along the way,” Darren explained.
The party will be split into four teams led by celebrity team captains, with Darren’s group headed by Bake Off star Candice Brown.
“This is a charity close to my heart as its mission is to make sure all breast cancers are diagnosed at the earliest stage possible. I hope my challenge will help with their aim,” Darren added.
