So what is wellbeing?

Before we dive into our top five tips for creating your own well being haven, it's useful to ask yourself:

What does well being really mean? Why why is it so important to our mental and emotional health?

Before we dive into our top five tips for creating your own well being haven, it's useful to ask yourself:

Well being can be summed up as our overall health and happiness. We measure it by how positively or negatively we're feeling emotionally, mentally, and sometimes even physically. It's one of the most important factors in maintaining a sense of harmony not just within yourself, but within your home too.

Start with a declutter

One of the easiest things you can do that will create a big impact is decluttering and cleansing your home. A cluttered space can quickly become overwhelming, negatively impacting your mood and overall well being.

Take some time to go room by room and get rid of anything you no longer need or use. This will help to free up space and create a more open and inviting environment. Donate, gift or sell your unused items where you can, rather than throwing them away.

Decluttering can also be therapeutic as it helps to reduce stress and restore focus. Getting rid of items you no longer need or use can be a liberating experience, helping you to feel in control of your environment and life.

Bring the outside in

Your wellbeing space should be relaxing and peaceful, but full of life at the same time. A super simple way to achieve this is by incorporating some plants. Try adding a few low maintenance house plants to your space to bring a little bit of the outdoors inside. Over the winter months we'll also be spending less tiem outside, which is all the more reason to bring nature in.

Not only do plants add a touch of nature, but they can also improve air quality and reduce stress levels. Research shows that horticultural therapy can increase feelings of well being among people suffering from anxiety and other mental health conditions.

Consider colour

Well being havens can often come to life with the smallest changes. Thinking about which colours and tones you use is one of them. Soft, calming colours and and natural textures can help bring a relaxing atmosphere. Something as simple as adding a cosy throw blanket or set of plush pillows can elevate your mood.

Colour Theory, the idea that different colours affect our mood, motivation and mental well being, tells us that greens and blues creating a soothing atmosphere, while colours such as purple can spark creativity and spirituality. The key is understanding your space and what you want to get out of it.

Find the light

To make the most of the light coming into your home, try to maximise the amount of natural light that enters the space. Keep your windows clean and unblocked and try using mirrors to reflect light into darker corners of the room.

The size and shape of a home can also have an impact on where you find pockets of light. A house with large windows on the south side will likely have more natural light than a house with smaller windows on the north side. Remember this when deciding where you want to set up your well being space.

In the winter months, it's important to take advantage of any natural light there is. Try to seek out the areas that get the most daylight and create a cosy nook in those spaces.

Add character

Finally, and probably most importantly - be yourself! Putting your own stamp on a place will make it feel uniquely yours. Your well being haven should be somewhere you feel truly at home.

Be sure to explore some of the ways you can bring in personal flourishes. It could be adding a splash of your favourite colour of art, hanging portraits of friends and family, or even just playing your own music can make you feel chilled and at peace in your surroundings.

In the end, there is no set rule - what works for your well being will be completely unique to you. The trick is identifying areas for improvement and trusting that a few small changes can have a big impact on your mood and happiness. Hopefully, we've given you some tips that will help you to make a start on creating that well being haven in 2023.
