Wellbeing at Work and Home

How nurturing wellbeing at work can improve your overall sense of happiness, comfort and self.

Whether you're working remotely, back in the office, or working from home, creating a sense of wellbeing in your work environment is key to feeling happy, positive and in control, while reducing stress and ilness.

A sense of wellbeing at work is all about creating a space that keeps you energised, focussed and motivated. But what does wellbeing really mean?

In this blog, we're talking about emotional and physical well-being, both contributors to how much we enjoy life, our happiness level and how energised and positive we are.

What you believe is your perfect state of wellbeing may be totally different from somebody else based on what's important to you, what we value, our priorities, goals and ambitions.

We're taking a look at some of the easy ways to put wellbeing at the heart of your working life.

Creating the right workspace

A designed workspace is the first step in creating an environment that fosters wellbeing. A place that is organised with the right tools, a comfortable chair for physical well-being and space away from others is a good start. Try to allocate a quiet space without distractions so you can focus on your priorities for the day.

Having green space near you is great for a sense of health. A plant or two is also known to reduce stress and improve productivity.

Add a calming scented candle or diffuser and your work space will be ready to support your day.

Get the light right

The right lighting can make all the difference to your work environment. Poor lighting is normally the main cause of eyestrain, headaches and fatigue. Sitting in a workplace flooded with natural light will help you feel awake in the morning and to think more clearly throughout the day. Plus, it'll become a space you love working in.

Next to a window gives you the added benefit of fresh air throughout the day too.

Finding wellness away from your desk

Equally as important as having the right space to work is having time away from your desk during the day. If you spend much of your day in front of a screen, taking regular breaks is important. If you have outside space, there is nothing better than taking a coffee break outside, enjoying fresh air and a different view. It only takes a few minutes to re-energise.

If you're taking or making calls, it's great to find a comfortable chair away from your desk so you can focus on the conversation rather than your 'to do' list.

Pop out for a walk during the day. Take the dog if you have one and enjoy the Springtime we're already beginning to see. It's a great way to improve your physical fitness too.

Be kind to yourself

In these times of agile and flexible working, it's important not to lose your social contacts. Working from home might let you focus on priorities but too much alone time can impact your mental health.

Keep in touch with colleagues throughout your day, take time out to have a coffee and a chat and keep building your network of contacts. Social interaction, sharing stories and time, is sometimes the nicest part of your day.

Back to work

As we start to head back into the office, it's important to carry over as many of these practices as you can. We understand exactly what makes a healthy, happy workplace, and our employees recognise the benefits too - this year we are delighted and proud to be recognised in the prestigious UK's Best Workplaces for Wellbeing List
